Dear friends,
We would love to hear about your current BioNova® projects. Please send Ryan, ryan@bionovanaturalpools.com, any information and pictures of your projects and we will gladly put them in the newsletter to share with all of the dealers. Thank you and we hope to see your inputs soon!
Here’s what’s happening at BioNova® Natural Pools North America…
Natural Pool Tips for Hot Weather
Temperatures are getting hot and when the heat hits hard, natural pools need a little extra care. Here are some essential tips to keep your natural pool in peak condition during hot weather.
1. Shade is Your Pool’s Best Friend
Excessive sunlight can lead to increased algae growth and water evaporation. Strategic shading with trees, pergolas, or shade sails can help:
- Reduce water temperature.
- Minimize evaporation.
- Prevent overexposure to UV rays that encourage algae blooms.
Choose native or non-invasive plants around the pool that provide natural shade without dropping too much debris into the water.
2. Keep Circulation Strong
In high heat, water can stagnate quickly. Make sure your circulation system is working efficiently. Whether you’re using a pump, stream-like flow, or a natural waterfall:
- Run the system 24/7
- Check for clogs in filters and pumps.
- Keep an eye on flow patterns to ensure even distribution.
- Good water movement helps oxygenate the pool and keeps bacteria and algae in check.
3. Support Your Plants
The regeneration zone needs to thrive to do its job.
- Trim overgrown vegetation regularly to allow proper sunlight penetration and water flow.
- Ensure plants are getting enough nutrients, but avoid adding fertilizers, which can upset the balance.
- Add floating plants like water lilies to reduce sunlight on the water and provide extra cooling.
4. Monitor Water Levels
Heat causes faster evaporation.
- Top up the pool regularly with fresh water (ideally rainwater or filtered water) if there is no auto fill installed.
- Avoid overfilling, as this can upset the carefully balanced ecosystem.
- Use a simple gauge to track water level changes during hot spells.
5. Algae Control: Stay Proactive
Warm water and sunlight are the perfect recipe for algae blooms.
- Skim algae early and often before it spreads.
- Maintain a balanced plant-to-water ratio.
- Introduce beneficial organisms like snails or water fleas (daphnia) that feed on algae.
Avoid commercial algaecides, as they can harm the natural ecosystem.
6. Swim Smart
On scorching days, it’s tempting to jump in, but remember:
- Rinse off before entering to reduce contaminants like sunscreen, sweat, and lotions.
- Limit the use of sunscreens with high oil content that can build up in the water.
- Encourage guests to follow the same rules to keep the pool water balanced.
Final Thoughts
A natural pool in the summer is more than just a place to cool off — it’s a living, breathing ecosystem that rewards careful stewardship. With a bit of smart maintenance and eco-conscious swimming habits, your pool will stay crystal-clear, refreshing, and in harmony with nature, even in the peak of the heat.
Enjoy the swim — naturally!
