Here’s what’s happening at BioNova® Natural Pools North America…
Mosquitoes in a Natural Pool?

It’s still one of the most popular questions when talking about natural pools to potential clients. There is always that concern that if you don’t chemical treat water mosquitoes will overtake the property.

Mosquitoes can live around natural swimming pools of course, but whether they thrive depends on specific conditions. But here are some reasons why mosquitoes don’t become a major problem in and around NSPs.

Why mosquitoes don’t thrive in natural swimming pools:

1. Water movement

If you are running a natural pool properly then the water is circulating 24/7. Mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water. Mosquito larvae (wrigglers) and pupae (tumblers) live in the water and need to stay near the surface to breathe through tiny tubes (siphons). Moving water would disrupt this and potentially drown them.

2. Predators

Natural pools often include insect-eating organisms, such as:

  • Dragonflies
  • Dragonfly larvae
  • Water beetles

These predators feed on mosquitoes and mosquito larvae, helping keep their population down.

3. Balanced ecosystem

A well-maintained natural pool mimics a balanced aquatic ecosystem. This includes plant life and microorganisms that keep mosquito larvae in check.

When mosquitoes might become a problem:

  • Poor circulation or broken pumps
  • Stagnant water in corners, pipes, or plant containers
  • Lack of predators due to overcleaning or chemical use
  • Standing water nearby (e.g., buckets, gutters, or decorative pots) rather than the pool itself

Preventive tips for natural pool owners:

  • Ensure continuous water flow. This is not only vital to feed the beneficial bacterial and biofilm that is constantly cleaning the water but it also ensures mosquitoes won’t bread in the NSP.
  • Maintain plant balance in the regeneration zone
  • Avoid using standing water features without circulation
  • Encourage natural predator species

In short: Mosquitoes avoid well-maintained natural swimming pools because they don’t offer the still, predator-free environment larvae need to grow.

Mosquitos need stagnant water for their life cycle to work.
Mosquito larvae like this can not survive is moving water no matter how slow the current.
