Preparing Your Natural Swimming Pool for Fall and Winter
As summer comes to an end and temperatures begin to drop, your natural swimming pool starts transitioning into a different phase of its annual cycle. Fall is an important time to prepare the pool for winter, but unlike a traditional chemical pool, closing a natural swimming pool doesn’t mean shutting down the entire ecosystem.
Instead, fall maintenance is about helping your pool transition naturally while keeping leaves, organic debris, and excess nutrients under control.
Start Managing Falling Leaves
One of the biggest challenges in the fall is the amount of organic material entering the pool. Leaves, twigs, and other debris can add nutrients to the water as they decompose.
Regularly remove leaves from the swimming area and filtration zones. A pool skimmer, net, or automatic cleaner can help keep debris from accumulating.
The goal isn’t to keep every single leaf out, it’s to prevent a large accumulation of organic material from settling in the pool.
Fall leaves aren’t just a cosmetic issue. As organic material breaks down, it can release nutrients into the water. Those nutrients can contribute to unwanted biological growth later.
If your pool is located beneath trees, consider using a seasonal cover or other appropriate method of keeping excessive leaves out of the water. The less organic material that accumulates over the winter, the easier your spring startup can be.
Leaf management is one of the most important fall maintenance tasks.
Give the Pool a Good Cleaning
Before winter arrives, give the swimming area and surrounding areas a thorough cleaning. Remove accumulated debris from the bottom and skim the surface.
This is also a good time to inspect steps, coping, stonework, skimmers, pumps, and other components for anything that may need attention before winter.
Remember that some biological activity is completely normal. Don’t mistake a healthy biofilm or natural biological growth for something that needs to be scrubbed away.
Don’t Forget the Biofilter
Your biological filtration system continues to play an important role even as temperatures fall.
Avoid the temptation to completely clean or disturb the biological filter simply because you’re preparing for winter. The microorganisms living within the biofilter are an essential part of your natural pool’s filtration system.
Follow your BioNova® system’s recommended seasonal maintenance procedures, including any necessary backwashing or inspection, before temperatures become too cold.
